barcelona / Calella - must see/go recommendations

Hello, I am off to (hopefully) sunny costa brava next Thursday. Staying in Calella but heading into Barcelona for the day. I don't want to spend my day in Barcelona getting lost so I could really do with some guidance as to how I should plan out my day - the fountains are dry (no water) so thats out of the question, I was really looking forward to seeing the display  . But hey ho that's just my luck!!

Also any tips for where to visit in Calella, we are staying at the Amaika which I think looking at maps is close to old town.... should we go there or better along the front.

All suggestions welcome - we are only going for 4 nights and want to make the most!

I am praying for good weather !!!

Thanks!

Parc Guell is beautiful, as is Sagrada Familia, would give Las Ramblas a miss tho!

Hi I've just returned from the amaika, hotel clean etc food ok ish but not up to standard of other 4 star all incs (out of spain) but edible, food around the area in other restaurants doesnt look much better to be honest so i assume thats all spain has to offer on that front (theres not a lot of culture to be honest its very British) Defo recommend booking the private sauna and jacuzzi in the hotel the day before, you get it for an hour to yourself in a private room.

There is a strip of shops and a few bars and restaurants in calella that are quite quiet this time of year, the beach is nice and relaxing. Would suggest going to Barcelona early in the day as its quite big and will take a lot of walking -would possible suggest two visits if there is a lot you want to see - train station is down the beach front 10 mins in calella and is 6.40 euros for a return.

Thanks for this review. I'm not expecting too much from the hotel but hoping the food is edible for 4 days. Are the rooms okay? Really we are only staying there because I want to go to Barcelona. Is the hotel near old town calella ? Do I bother to go there or just stay on the front? So many questions!!

Where do we get off the train in Barcelona I think there are a couple of stations, main thing I want to see is the Gaudi cathedral and Las Ramblas, plus any other recommendations from you!

Did you have good weather? It seems to have been very mixed according to the forecast........

We had nice and hot weather for the first 5 days then rain the last two.

the rooms are quite nice really, big enough and the TV has ITV and ITV4 and a news channel in English to keep you entertained a little should it rain.

Las Ramblas is the main part of Barcelona I dont think there's a whole lot more to it than that, maybe some old buildings but if you go along with our style of sightseeing that once you've seen one old building in the town you've pretty much seen them all with some exceptions.

As for your questions about it being on the front or old town, im not quite sure which is which. If you walk left out of the hotel the immediately straight on down the big strip of shops, i think that is the old town towards the end, where there isn't much to do apart from the train station to Barcelona.

    hi

me and hubby stayed at amika, its ok for the price, rooms clean, but hubby was not keen on food! (he is a bit of of a fuss pot though)

It was a couple of years ago, but I really quite liked callela, they was this lovely mexican restaurant, called groucho's, which has lots of pics of groucho marx in it, food is delish, well worth a visit :D

ps. we went to malgrat last year, just near. It was the first week in June and we had really hot weather, about 27f every day for a week, never saw a cloud all week
