Map of the New World: I. Archipelagoes
    Derek Walcott ( Antillas, 1930- )

At the end of this sentence, rain will begin.
At the rain's edge, a sail.
    Slowly the sail will lose sight of islands;
into a mist will go the belief in harbours
    of an entire race.
    The ten-years war is finished.
    Helen's hair, a grey cloud.
    Troy, a white ashpit
    by the drizzling sea.
The drizzle tightens like the strings of a harp.
A man with clouded eyes picks up the rain
and plucks the first line of the Odyssey.

Apparantly "Map of the New World", which consists of three poems, one of which is Archipelagoes, appeared first in "The Fortunate Traveller" 1982.

    How about:

Answer: Derek Walcott - from the poem "Archipelagoes" (also known as 'The Port of Spain') from "The Map of the New World" poems which featured in "The Fortunate Traveller", "Selected Poetry" and "Omeros"!

This week’s competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a modern take on epic poetry.

I'm wondering if there's a bit of a clue in the section I've underlined! Because if there is, that would make the answer Omeros which is Walcott's take on a Homerian poem!

    According to http://faculty.mccfl.edu/Jonesj/LIT2090/OmerosOutline.htm

    <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="600"> <tbody> <tr> <td>
An Outline of Derek Walcott's Omeros
Walcott's epic poem is written in three-line stanzas, reminiscent of Dante'
    terza rima
    </td></tr></tbody></table>
As this poem isn't written in three line stanzas, I don't think it can be Omeros.
