Bank account 'added value' insurances rip off

 I am a new forum member, but feel so angry about having just got back from a wonderful holiday in South Africa. We unfortunately were robbed whilst there, and when we both notified our respective banks for insurance advise as we lost personal belongings from our book (yes it was all locked), we have just been told by Barclays, and Lloyds TSB that we aren't covered at all....
Basically their policies aren't worth a penny if you are robbed from a secure and locked vehicle... so in short we are both cancelling our 'policies' and looking for a better organisation to look after our hard earnt money and belongings in future.
Martin, if you should see this, it would be worth you investigating..... please!!!!!

    Hi there

Many insurers are now saying that leaving goods in a locked vehicle is not enough; they have to be out of sight either in the boot of the car or glove compartment. Let's face it; if you are silly enough to leave items on the back seat of the car whilst you go off shopping, you are asking for trouble.

Another point to remember is that neither Barclays nor Lloyds TSB are insurers. In both instances, they are an intermediary and a recognised insurer provides the cover. Barclays, in the main, use Norwich Union (or one of their sister companies such as London & Edinburgh). Lloyds TSB use a larger panel of insurers.

Perhaps you could have a look at the policy wordings and confirm which insurer provides the cover. Also, I take it you claimed from your travel insurance polices; have you tried your home insurance? Provided you have valuables (sometimes called personal possessions or world wide) cover, you should be able to ask whether they can help.

Finally, I think that the major use of this forum is to ask for and receive advice rather than log complaints about the companies. I appreciate that you are upset that 2 claims have been turned down, but if you ask for advice from the members of this site, I am sure they would be willing to help you.

Oscar, I think Rachabaker DID actually leave the items locked in the boot. (I think "book" is a typo for "boot").

Most vehicles in SA don't have parcel shelves, so items in the boot are actually visible from outside.

That would be a hatchback, not a boot, tinkerbell. ;)

But I get your point - there's no point locking things in the "boot" if they are still visible to any passing vagabond.
