British Gas - total nightmare
Hi all,
I am hoping for some advice as a fairly new homeowner and a self confessed novice when it comes to utility bills etc. Our house was supplied by British Gas when we first moved in and since we had never had electric in our names before we had to stick with them!
We are now in a position where we have received a whopping £850 bill because the amount we set up for direct debit was insufficient to cover the electric used (would have been nice to have been told sooner!) We (myself, my partner and 2 year old son) currently pay £100 a month, live in a small two bed terrace and are not even covering the amount of electric used with this amount. We simply cannot afford to pay anymore and it appears that we cannot switch until we have paid the outstanding balance.
Can anyone offer any advice? I feel massively let down by British Gas and feel like we are totally at their mercy!
Thank you

I think it would help to establish whether the bill is correct in the first place.
I'm sure others will ask but we need some more information from you:
When did u move in?
Was the opening meter reading correct when you moved in?
Does the meter reading quoted on the latest demand from BG look similar to your current meter reading?
Are you using gas or electric for heating?0
