Networking a home - mixing the old with the new...

Hi there
Just about to move for a brief time to my FIL's place. He's set up with dial up and a very old PC (reckon around 8-10 yrs old - runs Lotus Smartsuite if that gives you a clue... ) with a built in modem.
On the other hand I have a Dell PC, IBM Laptop and a Netgear Wireless Router and Wireless Cards for my PC and Laptop - as I work from home.
I know I need to get an external modem... and I need to continue using wireless (as my office is the other end of the house)... but the question I had is:
Given that I am going to get broadband anyway (the FIL wants it, but would prefer me to be there to oversee installation etc.), how can I get both of these setups to work together easily?
Do I need to hunt for a network card for the 'dinosaur'... or is there a cleverer alternative?
Please advise.

I'd hunt around on ebay and get your dad a newer PC, doesn't have to be top of the range. but 10 years old is really getting on a bit, he won't be able to use the broadband properly with that system.0
