Want to start a savings plan

I want to start a savings plan, but want to know what is the best plan to start. I'm so confused by everything and all the 'advice' I've been getting from friends has completely thrown me. Help!

Nowadays there tends not to be any decent long term savings plans as such. Its more a pay as you go type thing.

You either have a cash ISA for the shorter term regular savings or you can have an equity ISA for the longer term (you can use either for long/short term but it depends on your attitude to risk and the amounts involved).

Avoid all the 10 year plans (like the Carol Smilie AXA plan). These are complete rubbish and you will be lucky to get your money back on those.
