Problems with Abbey (surprise surprise)

Until recently i've had no problems with my bank (Abbey National), however my new card hasn't yet arrived for May despite my previous card expiring over 2 weeks ago. I've read around a bit on the internet and it seems a lot of people have had this problem. I tried phoning their help line and spoke to a rather rude operator who hung up when asked to repeat something. It seems that various people have called to have cards cancelled and new ones dispatched only to then have the first card arrive; albeit very late. For this reason i've decided to stick it out for the moment. (I'm a university student so don't have much money to access anyway!)

Anyway, you're probably wondering what the purpose of this post is aside from a general rant at Abbey. Basically I need to pay a cheque shortly for the months of summer rent on my accomodation next year. It's for £250 but i'd like to be sure I have this amount of money in my account. For the past few months i've had Abbey's e-banking service so that I could login and track my account. However since this whole card fiasco I just seem to get the message that the online service is temporarily unavailable. My question is if someone else who had ebanking with Abbey could check their account and see if they have the same problem or whether this is simply abbey turning me away.

Am I right in thinking that the card number shouldn't change with getting a new card for the same account unless I have cancelled it (Which I haven't)

Looking forward to hearing from someone! :)

P.S. I hope this is the correct section.

You're right, but also wrong. If you were replacing a card that's in your posession then the number wouldn't change. However you've reported that your new card is lost in the post. As the card is mislaid then the card is cancelled and a new number is issued. As your login number for ebanking is your card number then this does mean you can't log in until you get the new card and register it for online banking,

Funny enough, I'm in exactly the same situation as you - my card had expired and they hadn't sent out a replacement. My e-banking is giving the same message and no-one is able to tell me why.

You might want to find out if they are actually going to issue your new card though. When I phoned to see where the card was they informed me that I wasn't being reissued a Visa Debit card but was going to get an Electron (Useless) card instead - no-one in the Branch was able to tell me why either. After appealling the decision they have agreed to reissue a Debit card but it still hasn't arrived.

Of course, if I hadn't phoned to enquire about my card I'd probably still be sitting here waiting for it as they had made no effort to send out the useless Electron card either.

I've had enough of them though and I'm in the process of organising a new account with a different bank. If the cards ever do arrive I shall make a point of cutting them up in the branch at the counter whilst voicing my disapproval in no uncertain terms.
