Refused a Student Bank Account...

Hi
I'm starting University in September and have applied for student bank account, however I got refused due to my credit rating....??
My rating isn't that bad I haven't missed a payment on either of my cards in the last year so did I get turned down?
Also do I need a student bank account or can I use a normal bank account?
I currently have a smile current account?
Has anyone else been turned down for a student account?

You need an account that can accept direct debits, it doesn't matter if its a student account or not, a basic cash account is good enough, the benefit of the student account is the interest free overdraft, however this is only beneficial if you can manage your finances well as at the end of the day it is still only a loan. I was refused student accounts from most of the banks but could get one from my Credit Union.0

is it because you are not on the electoral aole ,i would go in branch ,my daughter was refused due to my debts at this address0

I wasn't on the electoral role and still got a student account with the Bank Of Scotland.
It can also depend on the bank. Banks such as Abbey are a lot tighter and have higher expectations for credit rating etc.0 -
It's kind of irrelevant of the last year if you have ccjs/defaults etc in the past0

Depending on your age, if you don't have a proper credit rating of your own, it goes off the credit rating of your parents/people who live with you at your current address.
I got turned down for a student account a few years ago because I had been living with my parents who had a bad credit rating.0 -
yep, same problem here. i'm a mature student so it's my name they're going on, halifax refused me, but natwest offered me one, so try them.......
it might be that i have a halifax credit card but that is managed well, so i don't know why i got refused?0 -
