Glass ceiling/floor for balcony

Hi all,
We have a flat roof above our lounge, which is also the floor to our balcony (about 14 foot wide and 8 foot long). We'd really like to install a glass panel that is strong enough to walk on and water tight of course, as the room below would really benefit from extra light.
Does anyone know of such a thing and the costs for it?

Thanks!

Glass wise, you will probably looking at 20mm toughened safety glass of laminated glass, maybe thicker. And i can tell you it's going to cost an absolute fortune.

There was something like this in a "Grand Designs" a while back. I can understand the benefits but like the previous post I think the cost was £x,000s.

First of all, you would need a structural engineer to look at any proposal for this. Glass the size and thickness you will need would be extremely heavy.

I would look to use 20mm or 25mm glass for this. My calculation's for the weight on the size you've given are..........

    14'X8'X25mm..........630KG

    14'X8'X20mm..........500KG

We thought about glass around our balcony, instead of wrought iron & also inside, on the stairs.

finding someone to even quote was hard enough - £3800 for about 3m on the stairwell, of 18mm toughened glass & a bit of framework.

could probably have got someone to make posts n brackets, but it wouldn't have been practical.

As mentioned, scary price for what you fancy.

    It'd be really smart though!!

hmm, i think this might be out of the question then! I was just thinking perhaps a couple of 1m square panels would be good - but they're around a grand each. eek! it's not really that kind of house. it would look fab, but on a 3 bed terrace it might be a bit over kill. probably be better to stick a conservatory on the back instead :)
    thanks for the help guys

You'd also have to factor in the negative impact of being able to see up your grannys skirt if she was on the balcony.
