17 year old sons first insurance..Advice please.

My 17 year old son is due to take his test in a couple of weeks and hopefully he will pass.

What is the best route to take for getting him insured?

Should he take out his own insurance at a cost of probably £1500/£2000 or should I put him on mine. The only problem with this is that I will not allow him to drive my car because it is too big and powerful (insurance group 12) so that's probably not an option anyway!

Can I buy another car (which would be solely for his use) but tell the insurance company it's mine, BUT have him as a named driver? Or would they guess it was for him, does it even matter?

Does that make sense?

Thanks.

    Thanks.

It makes perfect sense, however, its known as a fronted policy which is fraud and will invalidate the insurance anyway. Its like telling your insurer you live in a 1 bed flat worth £70,000 in rural wales, when really you have a 7 bed mansion in belgravia valued at £7m and wondering why they dont pay out when you make a claim:eek: , you are (in the example you give) deliberatly misleading them and as such the insurance would not be worth the paper it is written on (plus your son wouldn't build up any of his own no claims bonus)

Buy a 1.0 litre cheap car, get him his own insurance on it and get him to pay it!
