Flex account just opened and no ID!

A while ago I applied online for a Flex a/c with Nationwide. I've saved with them for years and thought there wouldn't be a problem with ID. However, on the application towards the end, it stated I had to give ID in at my branch while the application was being processed.
I was annoyed as already being a customer they would have my details, so decided not to pursue it as it meant a 20 mile round trip. I'd completely forgotten about it and then a week ago I received debit card and cheque book without showing any ID!
I'm not complaining, but wondered what is the point of saying you have to show ID for money laundering purposes, then they open an account with no ID from me? Could it be because I have a savings a/c with them they used that info instead?

Possibly, and many banks/buildings socities use E-verification which checks with the credit reference agencies, but no credit score. This has been approved by the FSA0

Lol I've just opened a natwest current account with chequebook without any ID - and i've never ever dealt with them before.
Not sure whether I should be worried
When I opened an account with yorkshire bank, they wanted my drivers license, last 3 payslips, utility bill - the works.0 -

Correct.
Correct.
The same happened to me when I opened a nationwide current account as I already had a savings account with them. Their forms at the time actually stated they don't need ID if you have other accounts with them.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Thanks for the replies. Olly, on the online form it states if you have certain savings accounts you should tick you are a customer. If you don't have the accounts they list then you have to tick you aren't a customer. As my savings a/c wasn't listed I ticked I wasn't a customer. I thought that seemed ludicrous as I am a customer but my savings was an old one not listed!
Dire Wolf, that seems strange but given Regular Saver has mentioned they check your ID with credit reference agencies maybe that's how your a/c got opened. That was something I didn't know.0 -
Only some banks use this E verification system, and most banks/bs's use the "once verified, always verified" meaning if already have accounts , most probably dont need it a 2nd time around0
