free bus ticket

I don't know if everyone already knows about this but little gem i've just discovered, but on arriva buses (i don't know about other companies) if your bus is 5 minutes late you can email them telling them the details, the date, the expected time of departure, the actual time of departure and the bus number, then they send you a voucher for a free ticket. My bus was late on saturday morning by only 6 minutes and i received my free ticket this morning, saving me £5.40. I hope the bus is late more often i'll save hundreds!!!!!!! :j

Official MoneySavingExpert.com Insert:

UK wide bus company Arriva promises that if your bus is more than five minutes late, and it was the driver or the company's fault, then it'll give you another bus ticket free. To claim, call Arriva customer services on 0844 800 44 11 and tell them:

Route Number
Date of Delay
When it SHOULD have arrived & when it DID arrive
Contact details

Thanks for that info. I use arriva buses quite often, so now I'll keep an eye on my watch. 5 mins is only a short time to wait for a free ride next time.

Excellent tip, but somehow I can't see First ever offering that in Bristol - half an hour late is the norm for them!

Mind you I see that Arriva say

If your bus leaves early or is more than 5 minutes late and we are to blame, we will ensure that your next journey is free of charge.

My emphasis - I wonder how often they will say "we weren't to blame for the delay that time, there had been an accident" or something like that?

Still, even ONE free journey is worthwhile!

East Midlands Trains does something similar. Admittedly my delay with them was lot more than five minutes (nearly ninety!) but they refunded 100% of my ticket costs - including the elements of my journey that were on the London tube or on SouthWestTrains, despite the fact that those two sections had nothing to do with them and ran on time anyway!

First Cymru do similar but only for shuttle buses i.e. Swansea to Cardiff, not the local ones.

Arriva buses here are diabolical. My daughter has waited an hour for one on two occasions. I bet it is NEVER their fault though.

I wonder how you email them. I dont fancy ringing their 0844 number...

Arriva are the only bus company who service the area I live in and constantly have me late for work as the buses are either very early or very late, never on time! And on the way home I get the 8.15 bus although I finish work at 8.30, but I haven't missed it yet :rotfl:

I wonder if I would get a monthly complainers pass if I call them every day to say my bus is late again?!

The geographical number is 0161 9450055. It should be at usual phone rates, not premium.

(The number is on www.saynoto0870.com, by the way)
