Right, so how do you buy a house? With a lot of suitcases of money? Somebodies always first, running around with large sums of cash in this day and age is just daft.

When you buy a house it all goes through a solicitor. Their solicitor transfers the money to your solicitor. We completely trust the solicitors to not run off with our money, and if they did we are fairly confident we could find them. This isn't the case with some random guy who put an advert in a local paper.

Are you saying that you'd do a CHAPS transfer to a total stranger for £23k before you had the goods?

My point was somebody always moves first, in the OP's case he would have wanted the cheque to clear first, same same. We're not exchanging captured spies in the cold war

Generally I wouldn't spend that sort of money in that manner, but if I was then my choice of route would be cheque, Bankers Draft, and CHAPS
