What Fuel Allowance Per Mile Do You Get As An Essential Car User??

Hi,

I've been asked to post this on behalf of a group of District Nurses. The fuel allowance paid per mile increased for them in January for vehicles under 1.6 engines (not including lease cars). They are asking can employers discriminate against those who have a bigger engine car (tho possible lower emissions) and also wondered if you'd be happy to share information as to what other people receive per mile for fuel. Obviously this is in due to the fact petrol prices are increasing and they feel they are now paying out of their own pockets to visit patients.

The nurses ought to get their union to negotiate better fuel allowances.

They pay enough in subs!

They will have properly evidenced data - no self repecting employer is going to take anonymous posts off a public website as your grounds for increasing the nurses pay or mileage allowances.

And if they are employed by some local doctors - well just ask the docs how much they get in mileage, and if they will be spending their own money to go and see their patients!

Yes they can vary payments on the basis of engine size. It would only be illegal if they varied payments on the basis of sex, race, religion etc.

In the civil service I get 40p/mile if I have to use my car. If i choose to use it for convience, rather than a pool/hire car it's 25p. However I believe that "essential car users" get a lump sum payment in addition to mileage which we don't

I use my own car for company business, and I get paid 35p per mile.

We all get the same if we use our cars, regardless of size or age etc of the car

For privately owned vehicles used for business purposes HM Revenue and Customs allows tax free expenses claims up to 40p per mile for the first 10,000 miles in a year, 25p per mile thereafter regardless of engine size and CO2 emissions.
If your employer pays less than this you can reclaim the tax on the difference (even for some past years if you have been missing out), but this means filling out a self assessment form each year.
20p per mile for a bike!!!

Quentin thank you but they are not planning on presenting the chief exec with anonymous info, just trying to get an idea of what happens elsewhere, and already consulting the union. This is just an information gathering exercise whilst they work out what to do next. Andy1 thanks I'll take a look at that.
