Where to sell gold?

I was led to believe that gold is one of the best long term investments you can make. So ten years ago i bought £1000 worth of rings and chains. Now i want to sell and i expect to have doubled my outlay, but i can't find anyone who wants to pay a fair price. Jewellers only want to offer me scrap value and Ebay was a waste of time with scavengers wanting it for peanuts. So where can i get the best price?

Rings and chains, prolly not the best way to invest in gold, when you go to sell it, looks like you want a fence. Most people investing in physical gold prolly use krugerrands and the like or ingots or bars, am afraid I'd have no idea where to sell that sort of stuff, if a reputible jeweller won't touch it.

I am afraid unless you get a private buyer the scrap value is all you will get.

For future reference, bars or coins at low premium over spot price is the way to invest.
