You could always sell your credit note to a friend for cash?

If this was a refund on faulty goods then I could maybe empathise more, but as already stated, they don't have to offer you a refund at all simply because the items were surplus to your requirements.

It is annoying, and of course hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you should maybe have asked when buying the items whether using the giftcard would affect your refund should you want to bring anything back. As it's not a legal requirement to give refunds, it is always a matter of store policy, and therefore always worth checking, as it will invariably differ between stores.

B&Q can refund you how they wish as there was nothing wrong with your items, they don't have to refund you at all so a credit note is fair.

He's only asking for a refund to less than the extent by which he paid cash. The complaint is that another customer who bought and returned the same, paying by cash, would have been refunded cash.
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?
