The driver I am trying to load is from the disc that came with the cable, it recognises a new driver on the PC and has a picture of it etc, but it doesn't seem to actually do anything, and this is even before the set up wizard has done anything (because it won't complete) it disappears if the PC is turned off so it's not installed anything permanantly on there.

It asked us to uninstall the Nokia PC suite first before we put the driver on so we did that, do you think I should have just left it on??

You should I believe have installed the Nokia PC suite, then installed the driver that came with the cable and then plugged the phone in i.e. the driver should be installed before connecting the phone. If you Google this, you will find that others have had similar problems and some replies involve removing various registry entries to get it to work.

Thank you - when I get a chance I will try it this way round.

It sounds like it could get complicated with regard to registery's etc

    Two choices:

Install the Driver as the first thing you do and Let Windows find the Driver for you when the Wizard appears.
When you eventually plug the cable in(to the computer and mobile phone), leave the CD for the cable in the drive. If the wizard pops up again, point the wizard towards the CD to find the Drivers.

Second choice is to leave the CD in the drive and when you plug the cable in point the wizard towards the CD.

You may have to plug the other side of the cable into the mobile before the wizard pops up.

Either way, it's essential that the CD remains in the drive throughout the process.

Also, don't forget that you may need to reboot the computer after installing the driver in order for it to work.

Latest version of the driver here. It will be ok to download and install this one. But keep the CD for the cable in the drive, because the wizard may still pop up even after you have Let Windows find/install the Driver.

Latest version of PC Suite here.

If at any point you cannot get the wizard to pop up after you have installed the Nokia PC suite....., (on your keyboard) press the Flying Windows + Pause Break keys. The system Properties box will appear. Choose Hardware and then Device Manager.

Your Nokia phone will probably appear under Portable Devices. Double click on your phone model(should be there after you have installed the Suite and connected your phone). Under General check that you devive is enabled. Under Driver you can Update Driver to start the wizard. From there you can againallow Windows to point towards the CD, to install any missing components.

    Good luck. ;)

PS. There will be no need to play around with the Registry.

I'm not entirely sure how to do a list of files? I havn't got time to load up the disc again until I can get my son to bed later, also my OH is out and I usually like to have him there for back up (or to be honest, just so I don't go ahead and do something that wrecks the computer for him to blame me for - if he is there with me then in theory he has consented to doing whatever to it lol)

it says in the booklet "if your current PC version suite does not work with the cable driver download the latest version of this software from the Nok (what they have been calling it consistently throughout the booklet) website www.CA42.com"  just been on it and it seems very dodgy!!!!!!

it then says "please note that the PC version suite 6.0 or later cannot be used with Microsoft Windows 98 second edition or ME" I don't have either I have XP????

When it says PC version suite 6.0 does that mean the Nokia one that it asked me to uninstall befoer I tried to load the driver??? my brain is really getting scrambled now!

Back later have to do a nursery run xxxxxx

your right that seems to be a duff search engine site so no help there,
According to the site donnie pointed out(nokia) there are drivers for the ca42 cables already shipped with the nokia pcsuite, they will be for nokias own version though so may not work but you can try them,
To do that either uninstall and disconnect everything to do with this OR use system restore to take machine back to yesterday/before you first plugged this cable in
Connect cable and cancel any wizard coming up, connect phone and cancel any wizard, install nokia pcsuite reboot and test.
