Just thought I'd update for anyone who's interested. I received the itemised bill this morning and there are hundreds of calls to this quiz tv some are made past my bedtime too so I've either got a ghost or my dog has become a quiz tv addict at night!!
Anyway, I've just got off the phone to NTL, I was passed from department to department and was put on hold several times only to be told that I would have to pay the full amount, I'm totally depressed at this thought but I'm willing to pay and put it down to a miserable telephone experience even though I know there really is no way I could've called I'm not really a complainer so NTL win!!
I was put through to a nice lady at credit control who has advised me to cancel my direct debit, pay bits off on my paypoint card and then set the direct debit up again!! So direct debit is now cancelled, I'm still as confused as before but at least now I know I won't be going horribly overdrawn!
Thanks to all those that offered advice! and I'm trying now to sign up for 1899!Kate

I have fallen for this quiz tv, i was staying at my Dads when i found the channel on sky. I watched for a few minutes and reckoned i knew the answer, the presenter was begging for people to call in so i thought 'what the hell' when you get through(£1) you get a message saying they would put you in the queue for the studio, then you get a message saying you weren't succesful. So i rang again (£2) this time i did get through the second stage to the studio and was told they would put me in the queue for the presenter - sorry unsuccessful- cut off. So i called again, and again, and again and again. Now having clocked up £7 and not even given my answer i decided it must me some sort of con. I now know it is.....I was a bit embarrassed but offerred my dad the money.
It is highly unlikely that anyone outside your house is making those calls, it can happen but it is really rare. Diallers (corrupt software unknowingly downloaded to your PC) do not generally ring 'known' numbers ie a quiz show. If you have had no visitors and is not you then the itemised bill may be the answer. If it does turn out to be your son, please take a deep breath before talking to him, this quiz show really looks legitimate and as i found out. I am NEVER enter phone quizzes ( i work with companies that provide the services so i know how the odds are stacked), i am a cynic, well read, technically competent and work in and industry where we are made aware of fraud and scams yet i fell for this....
i hope you can find a way to resolve it.0 -
My mum is with NTL and her bill had calls for another number charged on her bill for several months - it was shown quite clearly as another number and she rang NTL every month from May to September to get this sorted out - she is 76 and doesn't need all the hassle although I will say she is totally on the ball - they were worse than useless, despite saying they would not take the call money for the rogue number on her DD, they did so, then their bizarre accounting system totally confused her (which is not easy to do - she is as sharp as a razor with money). Eventually she rang them one last time, totally went off on one and threatened to go to her MP and Watchdog - only then did she get someone who actually helped. She now has free line rental for 12 months as compensation but makes no calls with them - she routes all her calls through my 1899 account as she has vowed they will never get another penny out of her. When the 12 months is up she is going back to BT.
When I was with Telewest (NTL's evil half-sister), son was making an horrendous amount of calls to mobiles and my call charges were £250 per month - I asked them to set a £ limit on my calls and contact me if they got anywhere near it, they said they would but they never did - result was that it cost me over £1000 before I finally could get moved to BT and set up all my different CSPs via the Orchid dialler.
I HATE cable companies, they are useless, customer service is worse thatn crap. Whatever you think of BT, cable are worse if you have a problem. Also I am finding BT are cheaper and they will bar premium line calls etc, or you can do this yourself with the orchid dialler.
So my solution to OP's problem is - MOVE BACK TO BT! And take control of your phone charges.
