I'm trying to get the XP Pro testing server working but it's not happening.
1. I've the Add /remove programs windows components and installed the IIS.
2. inetinfo is running
3. computer name is NODE02. can't get it find the default asp page in the inetpub/wwwroot directory.
4. running tcp/ip. network present, but this a 1 pc operation
5. i did this about 18 months ago on same pc, it was fairly straightforward

What about the security settings on the directory? Also have you checked the version of ASP.NET it is set to use?The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

Are you typing http://localhost/default.asp? , or just http://localhost
If the later it could be that "default.asp" hasn't been setup within "Documents" in IIS.
Could check the Event Viewer, see if anything is being logged.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
"Default website (stopped)" seems to be big clue.
Tried starting it, timed out0
