Baking question: margarine or butter?

  • There is no substitute for the taste of butter. Any fake butter is bound to taste inferior.
  • Sorry - I did do a search before posting, but must have used the wrong combination of words! Thanks for the reference to this thead. I think I'm just going to have to find the cheapest butter.

    I'm with Thriftlady on this one. I've tried allsorts, and nothing gives the same taste, or even close.

    Ha I thought the title said 'better substitute for baking', I was thinking, but cake is the best there is no substitute for baking!!!

  • I try to use Stork block for cakes, but any own brand will be ok.
  • I use the cheapest English butter I can find;) I like salted.

    I used to just use butter but switched to marge for reasons of economy - still use for butter for toast etc. However I'm about to switch back to butter as I MUCH prefer the taste and I loathe reading the marge ingredients - as smeelse said the whole point of home baking to me is to keep it as wholesome as possible and for me thats butter.
