If you look at the packaging it should somewhere is some obscure corner say whether its suitable for frying and baking. If not I'd give it a go because I'm sure I've used it at some time or other cos I shop at Asda and have bought their own brand everything. The only margarines I ave encountered that arent suitable for cooking are the tesco value soft spread and some of the really low fat jobbies other than that the have all been fine.Happy Baking

I use tesco value spread for baking cakes without any problems at all

the only problems I've had baking with spreads like utterly butterly, just like butter etc is that cakes will stick to the baking tins,so I use tesco value to grease them instead

Can i use asda you butter believe it to make a sponge cake?
Went to Asdas today 18 July
They have their butter back on at 50p so it would be cheaper to use that, I have bought extra to put in the freezer - it keeps for about a month
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Hi there  We have an older thread on which fats people use for baking. I'll add this to that one, to keep ideas together.

Hugh thanks to Butterfly Brain, we have always been a "butter only" house as I don't like the idea of manufactured marg but I was starting to think I'd have to compromise for the next few months but I've now got18 packs of Asda 50p butter in the fridge!

My Asda had them pretty well hidden (bottom shelf, price hidden under the butter itself ), mine is dated until something like 9th September so it's in the fridge for now and I'll think about bunging what's left in the freezer when it gets close to the date.

I've never made cookies before and the recipe says 3oz butter - can you use "i can't believe its not butter" type stuff instead? I have this in but no real butter...

Will be off shopping in 30mins so any help woud be great!

Sorry for such a daft question!

if you're going shopping anyway then I'd get proper butter (even if it is the cheaper stuff)

I always use marg never butter. Its down to personal taste.

When they are made with butter they do have a creamier taste.

yes you can use the butter type spreads for cooking - the only ones not suitable are the low fat spreads but they usually say on the tub "not suitable for baking"(eg Flora light type of thing)
I usually use Stork myself or cheap butter in biscuits such as shortbread.
