Council tax for new build

Can anyone please advise me on how to go about getting the council to come and band my new build house.

Its a bit complicated because I have some land in the country where I built a small bungalow and have recently had some extensions on it. It was always supposed to be just a summer holiday house for us. But now we have someone interested in renting it permanently.

Shall I just ask the council to come and tell me what band it should be? Will they ask awkward questions and maybe back charge me since it was built a few years ago?

Anyway does anyone know what the procedure is?

Its not the council who are responsible for banding the property - its the valuations office - https://www.voa.gov.uk.

You need to inform them so that it can be inspected by them and reported to the council. The Council will then bill you from the date that the VOA decide the property was completed - this most likely will be backdated to around the time of construction.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Ah well you'll probably need a building control certificate to sign off on it.
You did have building control look at it as you built it?

The completion certificate triggers the valuation usually.

The VOA are great and rebanded all ours, as the dumb-!!! council had got confused between plot numbers and flat numbers, so the big 3 bed penthouse flat was a band B, and this tiny box ended up band D!

Just fill in their form online and someone will contact you.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
