My old man is a postie (SK area) and is always getting snide remarks from people he delivers to about the time of deliveries these days.

The public in general are ignorant of the fact that the delivery / sorting offices are not getting the mail bags until later, many rounds have been combined so thet are now longer, and a multitude of other issues which mean that delivery staff may not start delivering until mid-morning and may not finish their round until late afternoon.

So people, please don't give your postie an ear bashing when you don't get your post until after lunch - they're only doing their job!

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

i get this all the time in the callers office
when im on my walk i dont get much grief
i look after my customers, and anyone giving out grief better be prepared ot stand their ground ;)
its a rough area and had sporadic cover before i took it so had to deal with
    some agrieved people

    anyway i digress
the posties are dealing with a system/scenario created by rm's management
its used to be the mail flowed
mail arrived at X time, was done for X time, postie was out for x time, all done and dusted for x time
    now nothing matches
    mail comes in later
    posties start later
however early calls to big businesses and the likes of special delivery times havent changed.
so already you can see a problem

heres a brief glimpse of today.im working indoors just now in whats called the callers office
    i start at 6am(was 5am)
so i have to recieve(scan),sort, allocate(scan) and do print outs for the special deliveries(minmum 500)
these must be done by (ideally) 6.45 am but rarely is before 7am
6.45 to 7am the drivers come up for the special deliveries they take
usually they are not ready so the drivers are delayed
the early call driver(dealing iwth the big banks,HMRC etc) must be done by 7am including recordeds scanned and added to print outs
at 7am the door opens for collections and the phones go live
now i need to do those plus sort out any redeliveres emailed from the online service, log any customs charges, deal with previous days isssues etc
the posties sort mail until 8.15am
any carded packets from the day before need put away
for 8.30 am i need to do more print outs for the early calls recordeds that were not sorted in time for the 1st early call run
    another driver takes those
8.45 the posties come up for their special deliveries
around 9am(was 8am) i get any local special delivery missorts from other offices
i need to recieve, sort and try to get these out with whatever drivers i have available.if its a 9am special im screwed
if its for the big banks im screwed as they have part time mail room workers who finish at 9am
so some businesses get 3 deliveries a day, remember when we dropped 2nd deliveries to save money?
after 9am i deal with customs charges, the phone, collections, confirming delivered/undelivered signed items from the day before etc and generally its constant between them all

then you have the problem of part timers
they come in late between 9am and 11 am depending on their contracts
if they are late or dont show you are left with a duty at 11am with no cover

you get to deal with all the complaints, best one is how hard it is to get through on the phone.
kinda hard to be on the phone and at the collections point at the same time ;)

thats just the part im working
theres also the massive business replys section which is a hige job and must be completed every day

whoops bit of a rant :o
