This is my first year at growing tomatoes too, I live in West Scotland (glasgow).
I'm no expert but I think they just need to be warm, I bought myself a mini greenhouse from instore for £10 as I have a very small garden and they seem to like it in there, getting taller at the minute, but we get a lot of sunshine in the garden.
I'm trying to grow a variety of veg and I am learning so much as I go along. BEst way to learn I think.Payment a day challenge: £236.69
Jan Shopping Challenge: £202.09/£250
Frugal Living Challenge: £534.64/150000 -
They should be fine in a warm, sunny spot - A south facing garden is ideal. I've grown tomatoes outside up here for the last 5 years, some years are better than others but I've never had a failed crop.0

Am I right, you paid £18 for 7 plants and bags to grow them in? (Just had a look at qvc)
Phew, thats a bit expensive, shame you've already bought them, otherewise I would have said ask on freecycle, must be loads of spare plants going atm.
Still next year when you are a skilled gardener, you can sow your own seeds in April and grow your own plants for a couple of squid.
Anyway, lots of people grow tomatoes in Scotland, try to put them in a sheltered (with sunshine) spot.
edit........... tomato plants advertised on TV? Growing your own must be getting popular.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Hiya
If you like the tomatoes, they are successful and they are not F1 hybrids, you can save your own seed from them. Just scoop out the seeds from a well ripened tomato, spread them on a bit of kitchen towel and let them dry off well. Plants the seed and bit of kitchen towel the following spring.
If you have difficulties try potato leaved varieties and have a look at www.realseeds.co.uk for some very early varieties. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
It really depends on the summer. I did better in 2006 with my tomatoes outside in central scotland than I did in 2007 in a greenhouse! The difference was of course the amount of sunshine.
As mentioned already, sheltered position that gets plenty of sun.0 -
im in north east of scotland and i have grown outside in the past though not a big crop they were okay.
I also grow them in the greenhouse no problems.
I have normal tomatoes and 13 cherry tomato plants in there growing at the moment.0 -
