I assume your neighbour lives above you ? you want to fill the gap nice and snugly with insulation leaving no voids, then two layers of plasterboard with staggered joints would help, you could go one step further and put in a false ceiling as well if you have the height. Acoustic insulation is available from jewsons, travis perkins etc rockwool and isover are the names to look forMaybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'0

Thanks for your reply, no i have a semi detached and will soundproof the walls in the end but since the ceiling work is being done i thought i would pack out the void to prevent noise travel through the house

Hi Tim in that case I think the double board and false ceiling would be OTT
I've just been working on a new build and that was 100mm of rockwool (not nice stuff to work with) in between the joists, but I think it would be better to fill if you can, wires and pipes are a painMaybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'0 -
Thanks Travis-Powers, sorry for the delay in getting back to you,
Rockwool is the way forward then did the 100mm come in sheets to be cut down to fit nice and sung between the joist?
Also (yep another question:D ) is it best to to fill the void full or not..
many thanks for you advice also i will report back on how successfull it is or not as the case may be.
Tim
ps Thanks left..............0 -
Hi Tim, rockwool comes in rolls and slabs, the slabs are 600 x 1200 you can get 100mm, 50mm and are a lot firmer than the roll which is ideal for cutting and fitting It comes in different grades.
The 100mm is part E regs for new build and helps stop noise from downstairs going up and vice-verse as the party wall is insulated against noise from next door, noise will find any gap/void I think if you fill the void at the party wall that will help, I must say I no expert on this it's just what Ive seen.
If the noise from next door is unbearable you can complain to Environmental Health
