Ethernet Broadband

Hi, Can anyone please help me with this??

I have a home PC with broadband, using Thompson USB Speedtouch modem.

I have a work laptop too, and currently have to dial-up to connect to work.

I can use my home broadband connection on my laptop if i have ethernet connection modem, but i don't. Is there anyway i can use my usb modem to get a connection?

  • Yes, VPN is a good idea, but you will get pretty !!!!ty speeds. I'd personally suggest biting the bullet and getting a network card for your laptop OR buy a wireless router and get wireless setup (if your lappy has wireless)
  • hey thanks for the resposes guys, Mr Skint, that website is really useful too.

I have VPN (an i understand what it all means a little bit better now!)

But when i open up iPassConnect i can choose to connect to dial-up or home broadband. so is there no way i can use my bb?

When i'm in the office its fine i connect straight to the LAN, but at home it only connects at 50kbps and is so slow.
  • How do you connect to a lan when you don't have an ethernet card?
  • I do... there is an RJ45 for the lan at work, and an RJ11 for when i connect using dial-up
  • I read your post wrong, I apologise. Why can't you just plug the USB modem you have into your laptop?
  • In the 'troubleshooting guide' i have it says

    Home Broadband
Are you trying to connect using a USB ADSL mondem?

Solution - USB presented broadband is not presented by our VPN Remote Access. You must use an ethernet presented broadband connection.

    ???
  • If you buy an ADSL Modem/Router such as the Netgear DG834 or the wireless version DF834G then the laptop can access the internet as well as the pc at fantastic speeds.

The wired version is around £50 and the wireless around £80 I think. I may have overpriced so you might be pleasently surprised.

I also recommend amazon.co.uk for purchasing, as buying from an unknown can cause trouble with refunds and support, but amazon is known for good support.

    Hope thats ok.

The DG834GT (faster version) is currently cheaper than the DG834G on https://www.microdirect.co.uk, and only just over £70.

  • Thanks MercilessKiller, looks like that should work.

A friend of mine has the wireless version, but don't think i would need this as i don't can't see a PCMCIA socket!! But the router does have a 4port switch, so i suppose i could check that this set-up would work on his by connecting to a port on here. Is that how i would do it?
