Unfortunatly you can only have council tax exemption for the exact period you are a full time student. So for the period august to jan you will have to pay council tax I am afraid, though you can have 25% discount if you live alone with people who are still students.

It sucks - I had to pay it the summer between the end of undergrad and start of MSc

    Hope that helps

  • The idea behind exemption is that it helps those trying to study but with limited income. It is not intended as a free giveaway to those who own or co own a property. We are not a world wide charity !

Hi, I just need a bit of clarification here.

I am a full time student at college, is this the same in the council taxes eyes as being a uni student ie will I be exempt if I get my own place?

I am living with my parents at the moment, but next year hope to get a place of my own and it would really be a weight off if I didn't have council tax to pay while studying.

I believe it has to be a 'qualifying' course: you could ring the council and check whether yours is, or tell us what it is and someone here might know.
