Installed Software Sharing

I have a wired network at home with 2 PCs (Soon to be 3) and a Laptop connected to it.

I was wondering if there's any way I can install software on 1 PC on the network and allow all the other machines to use this software?

Want to install Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Encarta, etc etc... on the one PC and be able to access and use the programs on the others.

thanks for any help.

  • I suppose if the desktop icon has the correct target location I cant see why not
plus you can install software off the network.

right click an icon, properties, shortcut target, if this matches the same
as where the software is on the original machine I cant see why not.

But for god's sake dont qoute me, please wait for more replies.

    Thanks for your reply.
I don't want to install the software on each machine, if you see what I mean, Want to have all my Applications and Games in one location so as not to clog up the PCs when I get round to "cleaning" the PCs
  • yeah thats kinda what I meant just a pointer from one machine to the other.

So if one PC (1) had a drive letter of Q:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

    And another machine (2) had a drive letter of "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Machine (2) the drive letter would also have to be changed to look like "Q:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

In the Target, as explained earlier.
  • This however would be a true network in the sense of file services
you would have one machine acting as a mini server sharing resources
to the other PCs and you might have to add snap ins, in the Microsoft
Management Console, also issues of permissions (who could have access to what)

I did do networking years ago but im really rusty, so please wait
    for some more responses.

  • Oh jesus, not again!!

Im going to suggest that this is a bad idea and you are going to have all sorts of problems with it, including the possiblity of missing registry entries, missing DLL's etc if you do it this way. It's ok with smaller programs that are just EXE's but with huge suites like office and encarta its a bad idea. They don't take up that much space anyway, the packages you mentioned = Max 4-5 gig and that's if you install everything. Only install what you need on the machines if you are particulary bothered about it but you aren't going to see a signficant boost in performance, definitely not enough to warrant running suites like encarta from a network drive!

Is there a book on this kind of thing? Really getting into networking in a big way... would like to know more at a higher level. Thanks
