New build utility supply, who to go with?

We are about to build our home and we have to choose a supplier of electricity and gas and they will supply us with all the ducting kits etc. My question is who is the cheapest and best to go with? I can not go to a comparison website as there is nothing yet to compare!!

Thank you, Katie.

    Not understood!

What do you mean by ducting kits?

The gas and electricity companies(BG, E-ON NPower etc) simply provide the electricity/gas that is supplied to the house.

You could have BG initially and then a few weeks later change supplier to NPower.

Sorry i was a little unclear.
When you are building a new house the supplier of gas and electric you choose, supply you with the pipes etc. for which the electric cables and gas pipes run through to connect to the mains, it is up to us who we choose for the supply, i am just not sure who to choose as there are so many suppliers! Which company should we choose and who is the cheapest these days? We are living with my mother while we build, and sold our house last year, so it has been a while since we paid for utilities directly!
    Regards Katie

Katie, what I would do is to find the postcode of a nearby street and enter that into a comparison site (see Martin's link under 'Utilities/Phones' above).

Then under 'usage' enter the UK average figures for the type of house you're building based on #bedrooms

    http://www.simplyswitch.com/energy/switchingguide/averageenergyuse.aspx

It's clearly an average but it's going to give you a good guide. Plus, as Cardew says, you can always switch after two months or so.

I would be very interested in what exactly the procedures are for doing what you described please. For example who did/do you contact, what is this process called, and in particular what is the procedure and cost for connecting your pipes to the main please?

I ask because I want to get a gas supply to my existing house, and although its easy and cheap to get a trench dug and a gas pipe put in it, I dont know what is involved when it comes to the connection to the gas main and the taking-over of ownership of the gas piping.

I had an extortionate quote from Fulcrum of £17000 for the whole thing, while a quote from another company to dig the tench and lay the pipe was just £1500, so I'm wondering what is involved in connecting the pipe to the main and getting it taken over by the gas people.

Thanks very much for all help - I'm rather desperate! I have also recently written a summary of getting a gas supply on another thread.
