Electric meter registered to wrong flat!
Evening everyone. I've got a problem which I have been going over in my head for some time now. I've just been to the gym, came home and decided I am going to do something about it! (I need some advice though please if possible)...here is my problem:
In June last year my partner and I moved into a new build shared ownership flat. I wanted to move our gas and electricity from the default provider to Atlantic. Gas no problem. However when Atlantic tried to move the 'MPAN' number from my electricity meter to their supply they found the meter was registered to flat number 45 (we are flat 44). There is no such flat as number 45! Doh! (this is where the problem starts).
Since discovering this I have found out that when the flats were originally planned they were all to have odd numbers (eg 45) and these were numbers that the electricity meters were registered too. However when they actually came to building the flats they decided to go with even numbers. It seems that no-one bothered to inform EDF (who are the default energy prioviders) so the MPAN numbers stayed registered to the odd numbers.
Anywho, after many heated conversations and going round in circles for weeks EDF have finally told me they are aware of the problem and that they are trying to put it right.
In the mean time I am getting quite miffed. Bearing in mind I have been in this flat since June 07 and have not yet had an electricity bill (hate to think what it will be when it finally arrives). This is not my main arguement though (I can put money away for the bill) I am more annoied that EDF are basically holding me to ransom to pay their energy prices when I could get a better deal by moving my electric and gas to the same and cheaper provider. I cannot move to a new supplier until my MPAN number is registered to my flat number.
I am really REALLY unhappy about this. Just wondering if there is anyone I can complain to about this-sort of like trading standards type peoples.
I cant see how this can be fair? What makes it worse it the whole block of flats is effected but no-one else seems to care?? Obviously they have money to burn?
If all else fails maybe I will just forget about it and wait for the bill-maybe they will never send one???
Thanks in advance for any help/advice. It is very much appreciated

2008 is the year to:
1.Sort out electricity meter (if its the last thing I do-at least is means my other half will be left with the bill  )
2.Save enough c/card points for holiday to Mauritius next year
3.Start stoozing-maybe a slow one to begin with!

Hi OP - first thing - the pink text is very difficult to read IMHO
OK, MPAN mix-ups are very common - especially in new-builds where often plot numbers and flat numbers are muddled and is even worse with flats where all the meters may be in a communal area.
You could perhaps ask for a goodwill gesture (say £25) to compensate/offset the extra you are having to pay them (I assume they ARE dearer!?!) for the delay in them determining what is basically a very easy thing for one of their meter operatives to confirm.

I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.:cool:0 -
When no bill has been issued, Littleme, the providers can only recover monies for one year.
I like pink, some of my friends are pink. :-)0 -
hmmm can only reclaim monies for 1 year hey...maybe I will keep quiet for a bit longer and see how many months I can get free. Thinking now that since I am going to be stuck with EDF for a while I should maybe get myself a nectar card and start earning a few points when the bill finally does come!
I like pink too-although I'm using purple :rotfl: will keep it black though for mute_posting.
Thanks again for the advice, mucho appreciated.2008 is the year to:

Hang on a penny pinching minute Ken-I have just realised that before we moved to this flat we were renting a house for 16 months...I only received the lecky bill for that place when I moved here-does that mean I could have got 4 months free? Oh my gawden bennett this is going to bother me all night now-I have just thanked you for that post too :rotfl:2008 is the year to:

For bills going back 1 year (that haven't been billed) yep - but that ruling only came into force FULLY last July (IIRC)

Mixed up meters are a common problem in blocks of flats.
It appears that despite being a common problem, there isn't a well practiced mechanism in the industry to sort it out.
I recently had this problem with npower. It took 15 months to get the mix-up sorted, and after a lot of agro, I managed to get £40 compensation. Thankfully, I knew exactly how much electricity had been using and had planned my finances.0 -
Yes the same thing happened to me a few years ago after new neighbours moved in next door, Scottish Power changed our account to their names!! It only took a year for them to sort it out and a whopping bill for me to pay!!!0
