You don't need a lighter socket unless you want to charge it while on the road. Our TomTom can be used by cyclists, walkers etc. as well as motorists.

Nothing at all? Not even the 12V plug blank which has replaced the cig lighter in most cars?

get someone who knows a little bit about car electrics to pull a 12v feed from the fusebox and use that.

The battery on my Tom Tom is hopeless, the charge doesn't last long at all. Do others have similar problems with theirs?

Yes two hours max....although using the power saving setting greatly extends it...(turn off map between instructions)

Yes, you'd can wire it into any switched & fused 12v live wires you can locate.
Usually a Haynes manual wiring diagram will allow you to locate good candidates, and then test with multimeter.

Wow, 2 hours is a bit naff isn't it. Can you dim the backlight to increase the battery life? The charge on my Garmin Streetpilot satnav lasts ages - a least 3 days on and off without charging. I guess it may depends on how bright the backlight is. You can certainly dim the display quite a lot on mine and it's still readable and it also has a nightmode where the colours change to reduce glare and the backlight is barely on.

My wife had a Nissan Micra and it had a 12v socket. Have another look.
