Cambelt change needed, VW Golf 04?

My Golf 2.0 TDI is 4 years old but has only done 30k miles. I've been advised by the local dealer that the cambelt needs changing. On my only previous vehicle (Ford) I had to do this at 80k miles, and that's what the Golf service book also indicates. Is this work necessary? If it is, is there anybody who will do it with quality parts for less than the £450 I've been quoted?

That mileage and those years don't ring right to me for the cam belt being due. What exactly does it say in the service book?

Ring other dealers out of interest - to see what they say. Yours might be a bit bored or need to boost their figures.......

it doesnt just go by mileage,it also goes by time spent under constant tension, even when parked.your service book should say 80,000 miles or 4 years which ever comes first.

Our 1.6 Golf's cam belt went at 33,000 miles a month or so after its service. Your car is out of warranty and to have it repaired will cost you over £1,000.

So please take the advice and get it done and ensure all tensioners etc are done at the same time.

Cambelts are what happens when accountants get too involved in car manufacturing.........arghh!!!

80,000 miles or every 4 years for this engine. Get a quote for a new waterpump too - it's worth doing at the same time.

30,000 miles over 4 years isn't much in a 2.0TDi - I hope it gets a good motorway blast regularly to clear it out. Coking due to lack of use can cause problems on the turbo on these engines.
