In general, machine that runs slow like dog benefit more from effective spy-ware removal, and clean up of unnecessary programs that automatically start in quickstart tray, than from RAM upgrade.
Although general consensus is "I can never have enough RAM and hard disc space and beer in the fridge."

There says someone never having run (sorry, crawled) Xp with only 256mb!
I do agree though that someone surfing and using wmp is not going to benefit from the whole 2gb, 512mb would give 95+% of the benefit in that situation.
Set swap file to 'managed by windows' and then give it a good anti-nasty scan with a virus checker and atleast two anti spyware programs. I use Spybot S&D and Lavasoft Adaware. If no performance increase is noticed then either a reinstall of XP is required or you wouldn't notice me standing in front of you.... if it is boot up time that is bothering you, try microsoft BootVis (free) which tries to speed up load times. Hope you do notice an improvement...Great minds discuss ideas, Average minds discuss events, Small minds discuss people.

interesting that you state tasks required are not going to use much more than 512mb ram, yet you then advise him to add another 2gb of very slow disk based ram?click here to achieve nothing!0 -

There is no such thing as disk based RAM.
A Swap File / Virtual Disk / Page File or whatever you wish to call it is used in much the same way we use a notepad - got too many things to remember, shopping list etc. Then write it down and when you need the info just read it back again. Having a 2Gb page file on a system does not mean it is actually used very much, if at all. So, having 2Gb of real RAM means that the system needs to refer to the notepad less often, so in fact gets a speed increase. You can tweak Windows to not use one at all, but in the situations where you just need to scribble something down, you risk failure (crash/corruption) if it is not there. Hope thats clear mdbarber.Great minds discuss ideas, Average minds discuss events, Small minds discuss people.

I see you are from The Netherlands!, hows the weather?
I do think you maybe need to work on that analogy somewhat though, I suggest if you wish to use pen and paper paraphrasing you will need to come up with something pretty impressive to explain the extended addressing benefits of the virtual machine approach as taken by most modern hardware design.click here to achieve nothing!0 -
