Newcastle/Gateshead advice please!

Please help if you can! We are a charity (see https://www.differentstrokes.co.uk) running a conference at Gateshead Civic Centre on October 8th. I've managed to book some cheap accommodation nearly 4 miles from the conference, but I'm getting increasing reports from our members (many of whom are disabled) that they simply can't find anywhere affordable. Does anyone know of any bargain places to stay that are fairly accessible to NE8 1HH?

Anyone helping will be given the order of the :A ..............

  • How mobile are they? May worth looking further afield.

There's a Camponile, Holiday Inn, Travelodge & Travelrest (Services) in Washington next to the A1M. Takes about 10-30min by car depending on the traffic to get to Gateshead Civic Centre.

  • There's a Travelodge just off the Quayside in Newcastle (just over the other side of the river - and they'd be going the 'right' way generally for the traffic in the morning), Jury's Inn (also in Newcastle).

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

  • "Formula 1" hotels at the intersection of A1M and exit for NCL airport.
  • Also just remembered, a new "low cost" hotel has just opened outside the "Gosforth Park/Marriot", 2 exits north from the airport exit on A1M.

Both the travel lodge and the travel inn have places on the quayside but I bet they get busy, and I can imagine that they would be noisy at the weekend. I would not dismiss anywhere on the metro line out of hand. The metro is regular, fairly reliable and clean and runs til about 11.30 at night. See http://www.tyneandwearmetro.co.uk/

Gateshead is only about 20 minutes from South Shields, which has loads of cheap B & Bs if the likes of the travel inn are still too dear (travel inn is great, but obviously, better value for the likes of me with a family as it is a room rate). Worth doing a bit of research though as some of the B & Bs probably better suited to able bodied/contractors etc. and the quality will be a lot more variable than in a travel inn.

Gateshead Civic centre is actually opposite the metro (wheelchair friendly) and South Shields metro is about a 5 minute walk from the main drag down to the seafront where the B & Bs tend to be. South Shields is also on the lively side at the weekend.
