Joint account for bad credit history

My fiancee and I are buying our first property together and want a joint account for the mortgage and household bills. We have had a combined bad credit of around 40k which was settled earlier this year through Eurodebt and Payplan. Can anyone recommend an account which will help us out? We're not too bothered about an overdraft or debit card but would prefer a cheque book and will definately need to set up direct debits. I bank with Halifax and my partner with First Direct. Despite already banking with us, my partner had an email from FD rejecting her application.

How have you got a mortgage with your bad credit? I have bad credit and had to get an abbey basic account then after six-nine months of goodness got an abbey Current account (to stash my £8000 windfall). FD bank with you eh?

If you can't get an overdraft I can't see how you are going to get a mortgage. Sorry.
  • We have a large deposit and went through a higher interest mortgage company who specialise in loaning to 'problem' customers. At the end of the day it's a secured loan so if we screw up they get their money back from the property. Our deposit is more than a third of the purchase price. The mortgage is not the problem, it's the account to pay bills from we need help with. Anything constructive is welcomed.

I would suggest you try your own bank first- Halifax
If they wont give you an ordinary a/c try asking for a 'basic' bank a/c ... you wont get a cheque book or allowed an overdraft but you will be able to set up DDs and standing orders; some will give only a cash card others a solo or electron card.
