    I've been Money Tipped!
I'm an old hand at moving (13 times in last five and a half years!) and these people make it MUCH easier than the moves we have one ourselves. MUCH. I make sure I supply a morning/afternoon snack (cake/biscuits)and lunch (sanwhiches/cake/if I'm organised a bar o chosolate or similar) and I make sure they are drinking tea/coffee or water. I know that they stop to eat and drink, but my theory is the sugar and hydration keep them working and the kindness helps them treat the stuff well. I spend a bit on this I guess, and its almost universally well respected (one moving firm told me that the men knowing I had another shipment to do from same address a few weeks later ASKED to come back....it was a fifth floor walk up! and involved among other things two pianos!). Sometimes lunch is refused because people would rather nip to McDonalds if there is one near. I also give enough for a drink (about a tenner each) for a job well done. I also ALWAYS report great service to the company. I like to think it helps someone in a lasting way as a record on their file, but it might not.

Well, I wouldn't! Consider that people should be paid what they're worth these days, or not do the job. So no extras.

    Look forward to other opinions.

    couldnt agree more

once upon a time when serviced mattered, and people would do that bit extra just to earn a good name, and not rip you off for everything you owed - i would tip

    but not anymore!

Audi garage charged my elderly 65 year old neigbour £14 to change a brake light bulb two days ago.

three weeks ago Currys sold my 70 year old mother in law a 3 year currys warranty with her dyson (even though there was a free 5 year warranty label slapped all over it).

    should we tip?
my opinion: its a sad thing theres few good deeds being actioned this day and age that are worth tipping!

I tip for good service. Gave the 2 lads who moved us long distance £50.

    Nice attitude.

I have a friend who drives for Pickfords who I see in the pub most nights , he seems to comment positively if he gets a tenner, excitedly if it's £20 and doesn't shut up for about an hour if it's anything more.
However a tenner between the three of them doesn't go down too well.

tipping can offend people if it's not the 'going rate' (whatever that is) - speaking from experience!, hence I don't tip, then nobody is offended! People get paid fairly for the job that they do so nobody should feel obliged to tip. In the current climate, it must be hitting removal companies, so i think they'd be grateful for the work?

Keep them supplied with snacks/drink etc and that should be fine in my opinion...

    Guys,

Thanks for all the responses so far - good idea about the snacks everyone. I've stocked up on tea, coffee, sugar, squash and biscuits! The move shouldn't take that long so I don't think I will need to provide sandwiches, but if so there's a co-op down the hill.

I have to say I can't agree with those who say not giving a tip even for a job well done - I imagine that being a removal man isn't well paid, and it's hard work. Although I can see the reasoning. I tip a waiter if they do a good job, actually even if they do an OK job! I'm expecting (hoping) from what I know of this firm that they will do a good job, certainly the guy who dropped round our boxes was very nice and helpful, even if he did have the biggest upper body muscles I've ever seen!

It's only a short move, so what I'll do is have some £10 notes and if they do a good job and are helpful I will give them a tenner each.

Glad I came on because before this I was wondering if you were supposed to give £20 each... now I wont feel obliged and I will give what I think is fair ;)

    xx

Agree with this. I was quoted £600 for a two-mile move (single person living in a 3-bedroomed, uncluttered house) by two movers last year. I think that people will be laid off in the current climate, which is very sad. Again, I think that people should be paid the proper wage for their job and not have to depend on tips (which presumably don't get taxed?). Being fairly paid is the right thing. So, for the poster who sarcastically said 'Nice Attitude' have another think about my post. People should not have to be rewarded for great service, they should have pride in doing the job properly in the first place.

That is a useful thread - we are jsut about to move more than 100 miles and that will involve the removal men!

Hopefully, they will do the packing as well, although my OH is not keen of someone else going through his stuff! I am not intending to lift a finger... Especially, as it is going to be paid out of relocation budget.

Goodness, I feel really tight now!!! Mind you we did do all the packing and unpacking even though the removal company were paid to do that too, so they were time and quids in that way I guess. I would never have anyone do my packing as they pack all the rubbish too, it's a great opportunity to de-clutter and get stuff together to ebay/carboot/freecycle.

I agree with decluttering, but I we can do that when unpacking or moving to the house that we are going to buy in few months time!!!!

Besides, we need to move quickly and my OH already is up north, so I am not taking the huge task of packing on myself. Also, we did do quite a bit decluttering before we put the hosue on the market.
