I have just found out that from this september people on tax credits and IS etc can now apply free bus passes for their children's travel to and from school. Very welcome here as it is costing me £30 per week at mo for my four kids. On a different note getting children into secondary schools has got much harder this year my 4th child got turned down from both schools in area, one that my three other children go to and the one down the road- I even lost after appeals for both-she has to go to a different school from all her siblings in an area further away-and not a very good school at that!! What is the world coming to when a family's children get split up in where they go to schol?
I thought that if your child already had older siblings in a school that gave them priority over a child that doesn't

Usually so...but ts a catholic school and they have given al places to catholic-my children are c of e and then next was to kids in locality-we are just out as we moved last year...and siblings of non catholic descent come at eligibility point 11...can you believe...they didn't seem to mind last year when we moved and they admitted my three children-i appealed for one but went through. Had I known what I know now I would have applied elsewhere. I
The info for the travel passes were on the local children's services site.

    From the Direct.gov website:

New for 2007/2008: extended rights to free transport

    Primary school pupils
Since 1 September 2007, the right to free school transport has been extended to pupils who:
    • are aged eight to eleven
    • are from low income families
    • go to their nearest suitable school, and live more than two miles away
    Secondary school pupils
From 1 September 2008, secondary school aged pupils (11 to 16 years old) will be entitled to free school transport if they are from a low income family, and they go to:
    • any one of their three nearest suitable schools, and the schools are between two and six miles away from their home address
    or:
    • the nearest school preferred by their parents on the grounds of religion or belief, and the school is between two and 15 miles away from their home address
The extended rights to free transport are part of wider changes introduced under the Education and Inspections Act 2006.
