I've never heard of it being called 'Paying it forward', but I do try to do what I can. Just little things like giving some extra meat and bones to my friend for her animals....Usually when I've stocked up for mine and have lots in the freezer. Even paying someone a compliment about how they look....Recognising that someone has been thoughtful in something they've said/done, and making a point of telling them so. Sometimes just a few words are all it takes to let someone know they're appreciated and gives them a good feeling.

And I absolutely agree with other posters that say that it comes back to you. I know that if ever I were truly in need of help, I have a friend and a sister that would do their best to help me.

I'm a big believer in Random Acts of Kindness. The same kind of thing as pay it forward but you just try and do something good for someone each day, with nothing in it for you- however big or small it might be.

This is a lovely thread and makes me feel warm and fuzzy about the lovely people on here.

I too do random acts of kindness. I remember once being in a charity shop and there was a mum who was unsure about buying a set of babygrows - about 6 for £3 I just stepped forward and paid for them for her. I did not know her but guessed that she was in a bad way and wondering how to meet her families' need. I hope that the £3 she saved was put to good use. These days budgets are soo tight that most of my random acts of kindess are more in the manner of helping out/cooking for someone which makes it harder to make it random. However I do believe that what goes around comes around. Do it with a good heart and without expecting any return and you will be astounded by the returns.

Big believer in this, lovely thread Sammy_Kaye. It's being generous in spirit, not just in monetary stuff, sometimes a gesture or some time makes all the difference to someone. Some friends did the Tesco shop thing for me a while back when times were hard and they knew I was living off a £1 bag of pasta from tesco - remember those? I can't tell you how it affected me when I received the shopping and how whatever happens I'll always carry those friends in my heart.

    Hi All

Im not sure if this is the right place to put this or not but I just wanted to let everyone know about a 'movement' that is called Pay It Forward and wondered if many other OS members did this?

In the book, Reuben St. Clair, the teacher and protagonist in the book “Pay It Forward,” starts a movement with this voluntary, extra-credit assignment: THINK OF AN IDEA FOR WORLD CHANGE, AND PUT IT INTO ACTION.

Trevor, the 12-year-old hero of “Pay It Forward,” thinks of quite an idea. He describes it to his mother and teacher this way: "You see, I do something real good for three people. And then when they ask how they can pay it back, I say they have to Pay It Forward. To three more people. Each. So nine people get helped. Then those people have to do twenty-seven." He turned on the calculator, punched in a few numbers. "Then it sort of spreads out, see. To eighty-one. Then two hundred forty-three. Then seven hundred twenty-nine. Then two thousand, one hundred eighty-seven. See how big it gets?"

Well I am a huge believer in this, its not a religion, or cult or anything just basically doing a good deed for someone else.

A few christmases ago I had an Old Styler guardian angel who did a good deed for me and which i have been paying on since to others (I wont name her incase she gets embaressed but she knows who she is) my family had hit hard times, and out of the goodness of her heart and to my surprise two nights after speaking to her online a tescos delivery arrived at me door, it saw us through that christmas,

i was just wondering if anyone else does this? or if its just me.

Like i said im a huge believer in the pay it forward movement and even have the wrist band to prove it!

i remember reading about someone who was wanting to take a meal to their friend but worried it would cause offence so i know there are others but wondered what other good deeds other OS members had done?

    Sammy,

we have a pay it forward group in the uk, I signed up for the newsletter a while back.

sammy_kaye - Going back to your original point, how do you do it without causing offence? Its not a problem to help out friends and family, but I dont know if I could have done what dolly day dream did. Not a criticism of you ddd, but I'd be scared that the person would shout/swear at me IYSWIM? Hmmm, interesting idea...think I'll check out the website.

Its so nice to see people actually think of others

This seems to be a nice warm fuzzy thread.

arkonite babe - I jsut tried signing up for the newsletter but the link wouldnt work so have emailed then now to ask. Also offered them the enormous box of 'pif' wristbands that the american site sent me (i only wanted 1!:p ) and Ive ended up with about 150!

Ive jsut been reading about another group with the same principles as PIF - some of the members are students at a london university and as a random act of kindeness they saw a group of japanese tourists (about 6 of them) in the park and they went and brought them all ice creams! :D how nice.

    Ice Cream anyone?
