Bush Lcd From Argos

Options
18 months ago i purchased a bush 27" lcd hd tv from argos at a cost of £550.
it recently developed a fault (inverter board) i have been advised by local tv repair company not to repair it, as the part will cost £100, they also told me that bush currently have 6000 sets with the same problem and that these type of sets will only last around 18 months or an average of 8000 viewing hours before they develop the same fault as mine.
I'm outraged that they can sell these knowingly faulty TV's
What can i do?

Have you spoken to Argos yet? I've always found their customer service to be pretty switched on and helpful.

I will take a guess that "inverter board" is "power supply board" in layman's terms - these certainly seem to be a weakness in many devices, particularly of Chinese manufacture - often it's leaky capacitors that are the culprits. I have a dvd recorder that's similarly crippled.

Some repairers will repair the faulty board rather than swap it out for new - it might be worth getting another quote. I don't follow your repairer's logic - even though prices have dropped you ain't gonna get a similarly spec'd tv for £100, or even £200.

I'm sure somebody else will reply soon with more details on how to pursue a "not fit for purpose" claim against Argos/Bush and there'll be plenty of discussion about the relevant bits of SOGA you need to quote, but as my dad used to say "If it's broke - fix it!".

Good luck - and don't be outraged - life's too short!

    :)

Bush is a cheap brand unfortunately. The £100 might be better put towards a new better telly as something else might go wrong in next to no time.

Interested in this. I managed to prize a refund out of the manufacturer, via Woolworths, for a cheap LCD with a faulty PSU. There was a lot of fighting about the SOGA. What are the symptoms of your fault?

I helped one of my husband's customers get a refund on an LCD telly that was 15 months old. Wrote to the manufacturers, I think it was a Bush one too. Definitely write to the manufacturer with anything like this, and if they reply saying that the guarantee has run out, ask them why they manufacture tellies that they only expect to last a year. If all else fails, contact someone like The Crusader in the Daily Express, or watchdog even. Never give up until there are no options left.

One thing I always do - if I am complaining I always do it snail mail, I find people pay more attention to actual letters!

    Good luck.

    Hi tin,
the fault is in the inverter board which i understand supplies and directs the current which lights the screen. The set continued to respond to the remote control (still had sound) but the screen was completely blank, since it hasn't been used for a week now, it seems like the PSU has also packed up.

A local trade-only supermarket is currently selling them at £169 but i really dont see the point in spending £169 every 18 months!!!!

Since i found out more about these tv's i cant help feeling ive been slightly mislead or at any rate, not been told the whole truth about what i could reasonably expect for my money.
Thanks for replying, i will wait for more views on this subject before i decide what action to take.
    best wishes

About 4 years ago I bought a CRT TV which I thought was a Mitsubishi but in fact it was a re-badged Bush. It broke after 13 months. Got a local guy to repair it. it lasted another year before another bit of it broke.

I then disposed of it and bought another make altogether.

It may just be my experience but I would never touch Bush stuff, and would not have done so knowingly.

As others have already pointed out those with more SoGA knowledge will doubtless be along to tell you what you can/should/might expect.

As I understand it items like a t.v. "should be fit for purpose" a t.v. should last for at least six years. Therefore, you should be entitled to a repair, or a refund on a sliding scale-depending how long you have had the t.v.

I think you have answered your own question.

I'm afraid to say you get what you pay for.

I know its not what you want to here but to a point you get what you pay for.

Keep in mind that just because a manufacturers guarantee has run out doesn't mean that you're stuffed. It just means that the burden is on you to prove there's a fault rather than the burden being on the retailer to prove there isn't.

I dunno, for a TV I would expect that it won't be very good - not very well featured, have a great picture, sound etc, but still last a decent TV type amount of time. Even the matsui's, goodmans etc of old lasted a good many years before naffing out. The current trend of TVs that break after a year and a half it unnaceptable for a TV and one should be able to get a refund from the supplier. But it will be a fight. I couldn't even get a refund from woolies for a TV that had lasted 8 months.
