Horrible dark dirty looking foreign sticky Leyland Cyprus, blocking all the afternoon sun from the garden.

Plant a sensible low rise alternative now?

The issue here is the wildlife in the existing trees and that they will hold back noise from the new development and are a nicer view than new build houses.

Also this is a principle as planning permission was granted to miller with the existing trees to remain as thier development plan shows.

now by the back door they are trying to cut them down

Doesn't your dad have until 23rd May to put into writing any objections he has to the trees being cut down? On the planning application it says Neighbour Consultations expiry date being 23/05/08 and the status is 'pending decision'.

So if he has any objections make sure they are submitted by the due date.

Although the planning application proposes that the existing leylandii is replaced with "indigenous native species with a significant number of extra heavy standard specimens to give an element of maturity and instant screening to the existing properties backing on to our site".

In planning speak, they've considered what your father's objections might be and have submitted plans to compensate for them.

According the plans, the footpath seems to be a red herring - it seems to have been wholly on the land that Miller bought. Perhaps it was just a "corridor" used by workers at the old factory

If you look on the plans, Millers show a planting scheme of replacement trees and hedging that includes Prunus Avium (Wild Cherry) which is on the Woodland Trust’s list of Terrific Trees (lovely bark and spring blossom, good tree for birds) Fraxinus Exelsior (Ash) and Sorbus Aucuparia (Rowan/Mountain Ash - berries for the birds). All of these can grow to between 15 and 20m high. The “native hedging” includes the Dog Rose, Hazel, Holly and Hawthorn.

It’s understandable that you and your father feel aggrieved if the original plans showed that the mature conifer hedging was to stay - however the proposed replacements (which appear to be planned for behind the conifer line- presumably where the worker's footpath was?) are likely to be far more attractive to both the human eye and to wildlife than gloomy Leylandi conifers , but as the replacement trees are all deciduous maybe that’s a point you can raise ?

Really, the only native evergreens are Yew (poisonous) Holly and that North of the Border immigrant, the Scots pine.

Do you currently have a problem with the winter sun vanishing behind the Cyrpus? Deciduous trees help get over that problem.

There are other native evergreens: the Box tree (Buxus Sempervirens) can grow to 35ft , Juniper (Juniperus Communis) around 20ft & has berries for flavouring gin (:D), and the Strawberry Tree (Arbutus Unedo). The European Holm Oak also reproduces naturally in the UK.

My guess would be that the trees listed in post #15 will grow quicker than any of the above.

I did think of Box, but I was a bit worried about the speed it would grow.
