Hi
A friend of mine has signed up for NTL broadband, but they need a router, any ideas on where to find the best value one?
It doesnt need to be wireless i think (assume - as its likeyly to be more expensive) but any suggestions would be most appreciated.
thanks

Have a look here, http://www.cclonline.com/product-categories.asp?category_id=164
I got this http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=821&category_id=164&manufacturer_id=0
for my telewest cable connection. You get wat you pay for, this one is quite basic, NAT, SPI, X-box control. Does what is needed though, NAT and SPI for good all round security.0 -
Friends bought a Buffalo one that is suitable for cable from PCW, £30 on their Collect and Go service. I helped them set it up and it works fine, plugged into the pc but enables them to use the laptop wireless facility

Its worth keeping an eye on PCW for their website only bargains that can be picked up instore.0 -
Excellent - how good is mse! Ok, i am not particularly sur what features to look for in a router as i dont think i have one (mines through Bt/pipex).
Theres a local shop called "Scan" near us and their site shoes these 2:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=152542
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=100031
Although they arent in stock are they any good? Pretty sure the boradband will only be used for surfing rather than online gaming/watching telly etc
Otherwise theres this from another localish place
http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=2097&CategoryID=198&SubCategoryID=
Sorry for being a bit clueless!

I think scan seems to be okay when you can pick up from the shop and as long as you check that its suitable for cable broadband, you should be fine

Just phoned MorganComputers and they said they do wireless routers, which is £23.99 (not sure if is the same one as in the link above)
They also said some sort of wireless card card would be needed for every pc/laptop and these are £7.74. So the total is £31ish - is this a good deal? didint know that a wireless router needed an additional card - or maybe thats particular to they tye of model they sell.0 -
Finally (i hope) there is this from another localish place
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5162&GroupID=0
Is there much to gain with going for a wireless solution if all that the broadband is for one PC - where does the router plug in to? is it via the telephone port? If so, i guess the length of wire from the port to Pc should be long enough

Hi Donkeykong,
Ok, you might as well get a wireless router if you intend on buying a laptop in the near future, if not then you may as well get a wired router. I don't quite understand however why you need a router if the cable is only going into one machine. You might be confusing this with a modem?
If it is for more that one pc then yes, you *can* use a router, but there are ways around it. A router in usual circumstances plugs into your network port (rj45) at the back of your PC and usually the internet gets plugged straight into the router, and the router does the job of distributing the internet over multiple PC's. If you clarify what exactly you need I will help you further!0 -
The U.S.ROBOTICS model (8054) with twin aerials is the best one for NTL, a standard Lynksys or Netgear, will not work, plus they have had poor reviews
from https://www.misco.co.uk price £54 their pt no. USR018054never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow0
