Foreign currency question/advice please

Hi,

I fly to New York on Wednesday morning and just wondered what was best to take money-wise so was hoping for some advice... If I'd had more time (only booked the flight 2 weeks ago) I would have sorted myself out with a Nationwide card but, as it is, I have these options... withdraw cash from ATM's in NY with my Smile debit card, take traveller's cheques, cash or a mix of both. I'm just not sure what's best! I do get a special deal on foreign currency as I work for Thomas Cook so I'd get the business rate with no commission - just don't know if that's better than using my card!!

Any idea what my best option is?
Thanks!!

As you have been a member since 2004, do you know how to:

    a) Use the search function, and/ or
    b) Read the stickies at the top of the board?

Thanks for your help & nice welcome dmg24 and ince mon...

I did look through some old threads before posting but most advise getting the Nationwide card which I obviously don't have time to apply for and receive seeing as I leave on Wed morning! I also posted my question because I get this 'special rate' through work so just wondered if that was any good in this particular case.

So you work for Thomas Cook and you don't know about spending overseas?

    It gets worse!

As you will see, there are endless examples where your question has been answered. You just need to look (they are so apparent that you don't even need the search function!).

PS Welcome to MSE ince mon! x

Thomas Cook do have departments that aren't related to holidays you know... Anyway, I'm sorry for posting, I stupidly thought someone would be willing to help me on here.

Have a nice night everyone. x

sorry kluther, im afraid you question wasnt worthy enough for dmg24 to avoid being rude to you

ah yes the search facility and endless examples of the thomas cook business rate and the smile debit card answers for you, perhaps dmg24 you can show the comparison you read in the search facility

my guess is that the staff rate would be better but only by a little, i once saw the staff rate on a sheet at thomas cook and that would have just beaten my debit card with an added charge at the time

hopefully someone who is in the know will help you and dmg24 could learn something too

ah i see you couldnt find one of the endless answers in the search facility, and the links you posted were useless to the question asked

and now its a wind up:T

was it speed reading dmg24 thats the excuse or did you just want to be rude for the hell of it:rotfl:
