Email/bank scam - is anyone else affected?

I spotted a £1 credit into my current account with no sender details. It's not anything I expected to receive (and believe me I checked carefully). I also received an email saying "we have made a payment to your account". The email looks like one of those "we are abroad and have lots of spare cash to send to the UK" ones ie badly written and arrived out of the blue from an unknown address. I ignore all phishing emails on principle and have not done anything with the money or replied to the email.
I guess it's a new form of phishing that relies on people being "honest" enough to try to send the money back but am a bit worried that they now know that my bank account number and email address. They may have sent £1 to as many accounts as possible. I guess they don't have security details to take money out of my account but I still don't like it.
Anyone else seen this?

Hi Henwen,
Certainly sounds dodgy.
Have you spoken to your bank about this? I think that's where I would start.
I guess someone with more idea will post and give you further advice.

I don't think it was the email address linked to the account but I have to call the bank on Monday anyway so will mention it.
Thanks

Have you checked the email header to identify the IP address the email originated from?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I called my bank today and thankfully all is well. The strange payment was a bounced standing order. Thanks for the prompt advice though.
Just beware, phishing emails are getting cleverer - don't respond even if they say "we have made a payment to you". I guess the phishers (if there is such a word?) hope that people will not know exactly what is coming into their account -They reckoned without MSE-fans though.
To maninthestreet - I did check the IP address for the phishing email and it wasn't one I had ever heard of. It wasn't my bank or a fake bank address though I have had lots of those recently too. I no longer have the email so can't give you more details as a warning, sorry.

BEWARE of Natwest and Barclay e-mail scams. They have the official logos but ARE fakes - NO bank will ever ask you for you sort code and account number via e-mail which is what these scammers do. People do fall for this and get into lots of trouble.0

peter_the_piper - I get emails from Nationwide when my credit card statement's ready, but that's all they say, and I have to log into the internet bank to download them.
Also, their emails are digitally signed using PGP - all I have to do now is to find where I can get a copy of their signature other than saving it out of an email...0 -
there are loads of hallifax and natwest phishing emails going round. ive had loads lately saing if i dont updatge my log in details i will be suspended and it included a link.
i dont bank with natwest so ingnored that but the halifax looked very official and i bank with the halifax. took me a few seconds to realise it was a scam as i realised my bank wasnt registered to this email account. lucky i didnt click the linkWins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0
