I hate to burst your bubble but the petition will be ignored or deleted.
We reserve the right to reject:

nominations for Honours. These have been accepted in the past but this is not the appropriate channel; accordingly, from 6 March 2008 we are rejecting such petitions and directing petitioners to the Cabinet Office website where nominations for Honours can be made directly to the appropriate department.

Does it make any difference that the petition was started before March 2008?

Just to say, there are now 261 signatures on the Petition.

Many thanks to those who have signed, and to those who have taken the time to read the post... :)

Reading the post above-is it the correct place to do this?

I'm in, Martin deserves a knighthood. After all if an ex prime ministers son can be made a life peer (and all I remember him for is getting lost in a desert - we can all do that)
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Alvin Hall could be given an honourary knighthood as a foreigner - a bit like Terry Wogan's.
Lots of people have had them, including Bob Geldof, Bono & Bill Gates. Robert Mugabe got one in 1994, which as far as I'm aware still hasn't been removed.

It's a good idea, but it will be a better one & more supported if this site is still going in 10+ years from now without having been sold for shedloads. There's no doubt that Martin created something great here, but it's the membership that keeps it going, by people coming to the site, continuing to post queries & others taking the time to reply etc. When people stop doing that, it won't matter how many money-saving issues are highlighted if no-one's bothering to read them.

Debt can be a killer, but so can loneliness. Let's not forget that some people who used Friends Reunited could say their lives were changed (even saved) by that site, when they met someone who they were able to build a new life with, or renewed old friendships that took them out of the hermit lifestyle they'd been living up to that point. That site was sold for some £30m about 5 years after being set up, & if something like that happens with MSE, I'd say Martin had been rewarded enough.

At this stage, I think it's enough to say "Thanks, Martin, for all the help you've given me & others." I'll happily sign a global petition to express our thanks to Martin & the membership for all their help, but anything more than that feels a bit previous to me at the moment, though I do understand why the petition has been set up. The best sign of Martin/MSE doing a good thing is for us to learn from our own financial mistakes & spread the word to others. :)

What a daft idea ! Some undeserving people have been Knighted in the past ,but this is just crazy . I do like this site and its help in loads of ways ,but Knighthoods should be for special people , ie heart surgery pioneers, conquerors of mountains and seas, fund raisers , outstanding sports people and the like . So please stop wasting your time on this !

    Hi Stapeley,

I do not feel that this is a "back slapping and creep club", but a thread where a lot of forum members are expressing their views about a person who we admire and respect for the outstanding work which he does, and has done for us all for many years.

I feel that we are all entitled to our own opinions on this, and should all respect each others views.
