BT wont allow me to cancel service

Hi, I started service with BT last September when they had a special offer on option 3 as they called it then it was half price for a certain number of months. Then I d had discovered on my bill that I was being charged the full amount for option 3 line rental I phoned up and complained and I was told that I been over charged I was given a reference number and told that I would be called back. When no one called me back I rang again and this time I was told that I wasn't going to be refunded and there was no over charge. Of course I told them there was and I said I'd like to cancel the service because I couldn't afford this new line rental. The man at the other end of the phone then told me that the only way to cancel the service would be to pay off they rest of the "contract". I said I didn't sign anything, he said it was still a contract and I had to pay off £70 or £100 or something.
I am therefore stuck with it now and my last bill with calls was over £100, I don't have the money to pay this and they have now restricted my service, charged me a late payment fee and said I will continue to get more fees and if its still not paid it will go to a debt collector.
Even though I paid £20 towards the bill and discussed my inability to pay and was thus granted a payment period extension I was still charged this late payment fee two days later.
Is there anything I can do about this situation?

You entered into a verbal contract with BT. Which constitutes the same as a contract. By using the telephone service, its basically saying you're agreeing to these T&C's of the contract.

Regarding the late pay, if they've granted an extension then query the late payment fee, however if you miss the extension then don't be surprised to see the fee appear then.

Call them as they'll be the only ones who can help in your situation.
