I believe they allow for 1 year for "exceptional circumstances" ie resits.. if your ill. Contact your uni they will know0

Yes, there is four years available, to allow for resits etc.
Obviously, you'd need to complete in the three years of you do go back though, or self fund as four years is the maximum.0 -
As always, the rules around this are complicated.
Basically, you have an extra year of full funding to complete your course (e.g. if your course is 4 years long you can get full funding for 5 years if you need to resit or you change courses which results in an extra year of study). This doesn't have to be exceptional circumstances though.
However, should you have to repeat a second time (or if you change courses then need to repeat. The entitlement to full support is not automatic and there is strict criteria for whether or not you would get it.
If you are repeating...
If you have already handed in your finance form thinking you would be progressing to the next year, send a letter to your LEA stating you will now be repeating, the year you will now be studying in 08/09 and the new expected end date of your course. You also need to ensure your Uni sends the LEA a 'notification of student repeating study' - they should do this automatically but I would recommend you remind them as the Registry is often v busy at this time of year. The LEA can't process your application if you are repeating without this notification.0
