Replacement stopcock?

This is a bit of an odd one... when we bought our house we realised that the cold water stopcock is, in fact, broken. There's no handle on it. Grr! And we're currently redoing the kitchen and so we're going to have to turn the water off somehow in order to plumb the new tap in. The hot water stopcock is, thankfully, fine.

Does anyone have any idea how much this is going to cost us? Thanks in advance.

Depends how your stoptap is fitted.

Assuming:

a) you can turn the water off in the street
b) your stoptap is on compression fittings (nuts on the ends)
c) it's a metric stoptap

then it should cost you less than £10 for a new stoptap if you can find a matching one (modern ones should be standard lengths). Turn the water off in the street. Drain your mains-fed cold pipework via your kitchen sink cold tap, take out the old one, replace it with the new one. Don't forget to apply ptfe tape to the threads.

How old is the house?
Is the incoming pipe alkathene (blue plastic) or lead or copper or steel?
Do you have a picture of the stoptap you could post?

You may also be able to just replace the 'tap' or handwheel, depending on the type.
