Advice needed - car insurance claim/total loss

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help. I had an accident on Tuesday evening in which I ran into the back of another car, noone was injured and both cars were able to drive away. The damage to their car was minimal, however my car suffered a broken bumper, crumpled bonnet and it seems that when driving above ~2200rpm it kangaroo jumps/stutters quite badly.

I'd only bought the 98 Ford Fiesta a few months earlier for £1100 and had recently had roughly £500 worth of work done on it (tyres, cam belt, suspension). The insurers (Direct Line) informed me on Friday that the car had been assessed as a total loss, and that the engineer would ring me on Monday to discuss the valuation. My excess is £500, and I imagine that the car's been valued quite low. I'm concerned that if I settle the claim I may only receive £200-300 or even less to put towards a new car.

My question is that assuming it is a financial write off and not a mechanical one, would it be advisable to cancel the claim, get the car back and try and sort out the repairs somewhere else.

Thanks!

    Yes you coulpd do that.

Also see what your insurers will do about writing it off and letting you keep it.

As far as cancelling the claim, presumably there will still be one from the other party?

Thanks for your reply. When I said cancelling the claim I meant not pursuing any pay-out from them. I assume the other party are making a claim, although I haven't heard anything from their insurers yet.
