my daughter is going to college for a further education course and because it isnt higher education she isnt entitle to a maintenance grant...she is 19 and lives at home, her dad is disabled and im a fulltime carer, hence, she is eligible for fee remission- she will get all fees paid, but will have to pay for any exams......so - can anyone advice me as to what she will have to live on? is she entitled to income support or something or is there another grant whe could apply for? she would have to pay busfares/for lunch, etc for college....any help would be appreciated...thanks

She's really got 2 possible options here; firstly she can either go onto JSA and go through the motions of being available for work and looking for a job. which might be possible for a one year course but will be almost impossible for something lasting 2 years. Alternatively, if this is her first level 2 or 3 course she's likely to be eligible for the Adult Learning Grant of £30 per week which, together with part time work, should enable her to manage whilst she does her course. What course is she planning to do and what qualifications does she already have?0 -
yes, i was told something about alg of £30 a week, which she has to apply for when her course begins....she will be doing the creative and media full time diploma to level 2 course....obviously she wont be signing on for jsa because she wont be available for work, and, if 6th form is anything to go by she wont be able to get a part time job - the amount of work involved on the course and hours would stop that but, i will advise her maybe a saturday job? would she be able to put in for income support though?i ask because we will lose her £18 child benefit when she turns 20 this year in september, thus leaving us with even less to help her with...i really dont find supporting her through college, cutting back on nights out, treats etc is nothing compared to helping your child...thanks all0

If she has previously been in the sixth form, does that mean that she already has a level 2 qualification, such as 5 GCSEs over grade C? If this is the case then she'll not only be ineligible for the ALG but will have to pay fees as well. There should be no reason why she can't work part time as college hours won't be long and she's not doing a particularly challenging course. Is there any reason that she's doing such a low level course at her age (not meaning to be rude!)?
The only benefit she would be eligible for would be JSA and as I said before (possibly you didn't understand what I meant) she would have to go through the motion of looking for and being available for work.
Has she had any careers advice on her plans? I ask because this seems a rather strange route for her to be taking at this stage. What qualifications does she already have and what are her career aims. (I'm not just being nosy, I'm a Careers Adviser and have until recently been based in an FE College. Send me a pm if you'd rather.)0
