  • Don't clocks chime on the quarter past, half past, quarter to and on the hour? Maybe that has something to do with it? -or maybe not, I haven't got a clue lol.

I think the answer is 11.
The amount of time taken is really used up by the space between each strike.
There are 5 spaces between the 1st strike and the 6th strike. There are also 5 spaces between the 7th strike and the 12th strike. BUT there is an additional space between the 6th & 7th strikes. So there are 11 spaces between the 1st & 12th strikes making 11 seconds.

I put 11 before looking on here. I think I had the same reason as you, but I had to count on my fingers. I said 'bong' 6 times and counted one finger for each but the first. I did it again for 12 but ran out of fingers :o

    Morning Cheeky.

There could be some people on here who don't look in at the Inn or the referrers board and would like to vote for Buffy.
Hi, I have entered a competition for a pencil portrait of my dog, I'd be grateful if anyone was willing to vote (can do it daily)

Vote here, and Buffy is image 16 (same as my avatar)

    Thanks, Cheeky

Cheers for the explanation thingamaBob, that's what I thought too!

It's much like the filling the car problem from a few days ago, you start with a chime, which doesn't count as a second, then it takes 11 more seconds until the other 11 chimes are done. (Or 5 more seconds for the other 5 chimes at 6 o'clock.)

Makes sense to me! Which is saying something this morning - I'm frazzled!

My reasoning exactly, thankfully I saw the question in the metro this morning, so had time to work it out :)
